Why:      TO HAVE SOME FUN, to escape to the countryside, to fall in love with alpacas and to enjoy the Stress busting activity of mindful painting!

TE KOWHAI ALPACAS is a herd of approximately 65 suri alpacas, bred, raised and farmed in the Waikato region of New Zealand.

The alpacas live outdoors all year round, are shorn regularly (in-house)  and given the VIP ("Very Important Paca") status with regard to their board and lodging on our  Waikato pastures.

We specialise in breeding HIGH QUALITY SURI ALPACAS in a range of colours.

Our emphasis is on enjoying the animals, showing them and producing  beautiful lustrous suri fibre.  The TE KOWHAI ALPACA show results reflect the success of our breeding programme from National Level and down.

From that suri fibre comes the most amazing products.

Over time we have worked up to handling all stages of the fibre production process ourselves.  That way we know what has happened to the fibre at every step of the production chain.

We shear our own animals on farm.  We skirt and store the fibre.  Then we wash the fibre, card the fibre and spin and/or felt our own suri products on farm.

Suri Alpacas have a low environmental impact on our pastures, as they have soft padded feet.

We try to do all our farming in an environmentally friendly way.

Suri Alpacas are RARE and have an especially superb fibre.  Therefore for reasons of scarcity and high quality these animals should not be slaughtered.   Anyone making good breeding decisions does not need to cull from their herd in this manner.

Suri alpacas are "soul-food", highly therapeutic to work with and a total delight to own.

We do NOT endorse the killing of suri alpacas for protein and associated by products!
