About Us     

Te Kowhai Alpacas is a family business operated by Stuart and Ann Weir. We are located to the north west of Hamilton City, New Zealand, equidistant between the small towns of Te Kowhai and Horotiu.

Suri alpaca have captivated us with their enthralling behaviour, their incredibly soft and lustrous fibre, their gentle natures and their relatively low maintrenance requirements. Our journey with alpacas began in 2006 and has grown from then. The emphasis at Te Kowhai Alpacas is on breeding high quality animals to produce high quality fleece. To achieve this our emphasis is on using "Superior Sires" and building a suri breeding herd based on "Dams of Distinction".

We show both animals and fleeces regularly at Local, Royal and National shows. This enables us to display our animals and to get feedback on our animals and our breeding programme.

We are delighted that the National Alpaca Expo's 2011, 2012, 2013, 2015, 2017 and 2018 show results affirmed our current breeding decisions. On even years, the National Show is in the South Island.  We only sent fleeces to the South Island in 2018.
