TE KOWHAI ALPACAS was awarded the BEST IN SHOW SURI
EXHIBITOR at the NEW ZEALAND EASTER SHOW, 2012.
Te Kowhai Alpacas is a boutique alpaca stud specialising in breeding high quality suri alpacas in a range of colours.
Coloured suri alpacas are rare, making up approximately 3% of the world’s alpaca population. The suri fleece is a highly sought after natural fibre, that can be used in high-end fashion garments. Suri alpaca fibre has unique properties. It is soft and slippery to handle and has exquisite lustre. Cloth made from high quality suri fibre has amazing draping abilities. There are still wide-ranging opportunities for new breeders to enter the industry and make their mark.
Te Kowhai Alpacas is a family business operated by Stuart and Ann Weir. We are located to the North West of Hamilton City, New Zealand, equidistant between the small towns of Te Kowhai and Horotiu.
Suri Alpacas have captivated us with their enthralling behaviour, their incredibly soft and luxurious fibre, their gentle natures and their relatively low maintenance requirements. Our journey with alpacas began in 2006.
The emphasis at Te Kowhai Alpacas is on breeding high quality animals to produce high quality fleeces. We show both animals and fleeces regularly at local, Royal and National level. This enables us to get feedback on our animals and our breeding programme.
At Te Kowhai Alpacas our emphasis is on using "Superior Sires" and building a suri breeding herd based on "Dams of Distinction". We are delighted that the National Expo 2011 show results affirmed our current breeding decisions.

We are a member of the Alpaca Association of New Zealand. |
